“Oh SH**, when did this happen?" - Something you may have told yourself when taking the time to actually look yourself in the mirror. With your busy schedule filled with family, work, and hopefully some sleep...your fitness life may have been sitting on the back burner for who knows how long. Don’t fret, it’s never too late to go hard on implementing a challenging, yet realistic fitness goal. As my old pal would say, The Power is Yours!
Relax, breathe and make a plan. Your fitness and health is a lifestyle, not a 100 meter dash - It’s just as for real as you making sure your family is happy and healthy. It’s your baby. Realistically incorporate fitness and healthy eating habits into your life. Here’s a relative example: Start a loose structured regimen with three workouts a week that are between 5-30 minutes long, while cutting back (not cutting cold turkey) on your worst, favorite meals. A slow and steady start will help win the race!
Step 1: Make a personal goal - not an Instagram vanity goal to get everyone to acknowledge your accomplishments. Your goal needs to be for you! No one is going to be in that gym with you sharing the reps, pushing you to keep working past the burning numbness you’ll at first need to overcome - So don’t depend on anyone but yourself to pat yourself on the back every time you accomplish a goal.
Step 2: Now, find a means to achieve those goals - A great personal trainer will work with you to meet them, but you can always choose to tackle them on your own as well. Sometimes you're the first person amongst your friends and family to start the domino effect. How about a workout partner? Corporate fitness? I also hear bootcamps are a great place to start…[cough cough, shameless plug - click here]
Step 3 - GO HARD EVEN WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH - DO NOT GIVE UP! Once you get the wheels turning, it’s like maintaining a well run machine - Consistently grease the wheels and clean out the oil for an excellent, smooth run. That means keeping the workouts fresh, and also keeping the equipment and gear up to date.
Kicking you off on the right foot, remember to keep people and activities in your life that don’t allow you to give up. The more [positive and relative] vibes you keep around, your results will reflect the same. Take a leap and sign up for that marathon at the end of the year, go buy that bikini, red leather Michael Jackson Thriller jacket? Sure!..MAKE. IT. HAPPEN.
Your body is ready to be fit, it’s just waiting on you to take this challenge of your lifetime and make life happen. Leave a comment on your story of beginning your fitness journey - Keep me posted on your ventures!
