So you don't have a gym membership (for whatever reason that is, no problem!) but you need to get a good workout in...good news! You can work out basically anywhere, anyhow and get it in! Have you heard of my Bootcamp 4 The People, for instance? I've heard from many new trainees that they are somewhat intimidated by the gym simply because they feel everyone is watching them and they're not quite comfortable working out in front of people just yet. Thats perfectly okay, and I'm about to bring you the best news of your life...fun and effective workouts that you don't need a gym for! You just need to bring your a-game 100% and get ready to sweat!
Sidewalks around your neighborhood? Go for a brisk walk or run. This is also a great beginner exercise activity for those starting a routine. Builds your stamina up! Make it a goal to get to the point of jogging 20 minutes. At that point you will have better endurance than 85% of the population.
Kettle bells. If you don't have one, head to Target, Walmart, or local sports good store to get a 10-15lb. Bell. YouTube some videos, study the movements, then try following a 15-30 minute workout right from in your own home.
Do chores around your home ( safely) like vacuuming, washing dishes, washing clothes, sweeping, mopping. You'd be surprised how many calories you'll burn and how much muscle can be built. Especially if you scrub the floors!
Yoga. Get a yoga mat and practice vinyasa flow. It will give you a run for your money! It's rigorous, makes you sweat, and ups your yoga game!
Have a baby or older children? Get them out there with you for a jog, with the baby in the stroller or by playing sports with your older children. You'll thank yourself for keeping your kids active and healthy as well.
Grab your bike (rent one if you don't have one) and look up the nearest trails. Hit the road and make up your own cycling routine!
Near a lake or ocean? How about stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, canoeing, or just out for straight up swimming. Swimming is THE BEST cardio in the world. Full body resistance that is low impact on the muscles and joints. It is a fat burning machine.
Ask questions! You never know how many of your friends or friends of friends who may be seeking the same thing you are. Post up a group invite to workout on your social media sites and meet up whoever is down for your cause. Power in numbers, baby!
Be your own cheerleader and focus on consistency, no matter the length of time or quality of intensity of your workouts. Shorter time limit? Higher intensity workout! More time available? Allow for lower intensity workouts (if desired) and make it fun!
I know what some of you may be thinking…”Matt, I just don't have time for any of this stuff. I'm super busy and will never get to it.” Well, if that's what you say to yourself and others, that's what you're going to get! NO RESULTS. Tell yourself you got this, and that you will make time for your fitness life. If it takes jogging in place or busting out those squats in between your children’s nap time, at your desk at work, or where ever in the World you are...DO IT! After you get over the fact that some people may look and most people could care less about what you're doing...you'll achieve even the wildest of health goals. Remember, fitness and health is a lifestyle. You make time for what you believe is important to you.
