As lovely as it would be to think that all of you little buggers out there would never eat at an unhealthy restaurant, I’m not living in a fitness snow globe, nor do I live at the gym as some might think. I know it’s hard to resist, so today’s blog is to help you stay healthy when you absolutely must treat yo self.
Many people that are new to the healthy eating lifestyle think they must entirely cut their favorite foods all at once and never ever eat out. Admittedly, it’s true that you really want to cut back on eating out considering eating out usually leads to eating unhealthy.
But you don’t have to completely deny yourself all the time. In fact, if you try to quit fast food and going to your favorite restaurant cold turkey, it often leads to loss of willpower, binge eating, and extreme regret that you had two appetizers and an entire basket of crawfish that you said you would share with your girlfriend but secretly you know she doesn’t like them but is too nice to say anything about it. . . . . not speaking from experience here.
Besides wanting to eat out yourself, eating out in social situations are almost entirely unavoidable unless you want to be the jerk that never hangs with your friends, or is way too picky about where they eat.
Aaaannnyways, keeping in mind that I have no experience with the above situations, the point is that you have more options than you know to make your dining experience healthier, while enjoying any restaurant.
If you’re just going out to eat with friends or your SO and want to keep your diet, try these tactics.
Two words, Side salad: No matter where you are, nearly every fast food joint now, almost every chain or mom n’ pop restaurant has at least a small little side salad. Ask for it right away so you don’t make a hasty, unhealthy decision in a moment of weakness. You will fill up a bit and have a clearer head to order something healthier. You can always make it a meal and add a lean protein like chicken or fish. Lucky for you, most places have very good salad entree options as well. Remember, always ask for the dressing on the side. You don’t want your healthy salad to be swimming in a pool of fattening . . um fattening . . stuff. Whatever, you get the picture.
Special prep: There is pretty much no limit to the modifications of special preparations a restaurant will do for your meal if you just ask. Going light on things like cheese and sauces will always benefit you. Ask if they have a whole wheat option. If something is fried, ask for it grilled. Bonus points if you add any sort of veggie! You can substitute veggies in place of fries most of the time.
Don’t be fooled: If any description of food includes words like creamy, breaded, or smothered or stuffed, it is loaded with hidden fats. Steer clear of those little tricksters!
Opt for an appetizer: Many times appetizers have a little bit of what you love. If there are veggie and seafood based apps, go for one or two for your meal instead of a giant entree.
Split: Split an entree with a friend! This is a great option because it forces you to eat a reasonable portion size. If no one wants the healthy options you want, ask the waiter to box half your dish before they bring it to the table.
Always choose water: This will save you money and calories. Sugary sodas and sweet tea are a big health no no. Water will not only help you feel fuller, but it will help you enjoy the taste of your food more by cleansing your palate.
